Rocketboom: When Beauty Sells

Oh yes, I can already hear you squirm from here feeling sick of the whole Amanda Congdon fiasco. Likewise. But let me just pretend to ride the coattails for a moment.

As a briefer for those who may not recognize the site, Rocketboom, a brainchild of Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon, is an online video journal that features three-minute episodes of Internet matters, politics, pop culture, anything they find of interest, updated weekdays. It started two years ago, and created a big buzz around the blogging network or “blogosphere”. A big portion of Rocketboom’s success may be attributed to its former host.

Amanda CongdonThis blonde beauty who is probably a prettier version of Ann Coulter has made quite a number of admirers across the blogosphere. Indeed, we cannot rule out her juggernaut academic background. But in this male dominated industry that is the Internet media, will Rocketboom have flourished, attracted investors, and garnered mainstream media attention if it were a flamboyant effeminate male host with a lisp in a pink tutu? Not in a million years, I guess. It seems that a lot are still mesmerized by and favour a blue-eyed blonde hair idea of beauty.

Hence, the blonde mirror image replacement? How anti-climactic can you get? That was one bad move, sir Baron. R.I.P. Rocketboom.
